Woronora Valley – Beautiful Location of the Sanctuary Retreat

Woronora Valley view from Sanctuary Wellness Retreat

The Sanctuary Retreat sits in the suburb of Loftus, perched above the beautiful Woronora Valley. Considered to be one of Sydney’s best-kept secrets, the valley is a scenic and peaceful location with pristine waterways, nature, and wildlife.

The suburb of Woronora is split by the Woronora River. The river system starts at Darkes Forest and runs through the Woronora Dam before entering the main part of the valley. The Woronora River eventually joins with the Georges River at Como and from there runs into Botany Bay.

The whole area was once the domain of the indigenous Dharawal people, known as the “freshwater people”. Their lands extended down as far as Nowra, as well as across the Georges River to the west. For the main part, however, they were mainly concentrated to the south of Botany Bay.

Enjoying Woronora

From our retreat location in Loftus, there is much to experience locally. A short walk down the hill will take you to the many incredible paths and bushwalks available in the area. A particularly enjoyable walk is the Loftus Creek Fire Trail down to Prince Edward Park on the river. It is an undulating walk, though not overly difficult, with plenty to see along the way.

Between any classes you have at the retreat, you’ll be able to absorb some of the local beauty of the Sutherland Shire. Get out and about, work up a sweat, feel closer to nature, and let the peace descend upon you.

The vegetation leans towards multiple varieties of Eucalyptus, with Banksia and Melaleuca also. Amongst these, you’ll hopefully catch a glimpse of the many native species of native wildlife. Woronora Valley is home to mammals ranging from koalas to the endangered squirrel gliders and spotted-tailed quolls.

For bird lovers, there are many varieties of owls, parrots, and the Glossy Black Cockatoo. Unfortunately many of these, too, are threatened species so please take the time to appreciate their value whilst enjoying their beauty.

As well as the stunning surroundings, the Sanctuary offers a place of calm and relaxation. Whether you are booking in for one of our signature yoga retreats, a short-stay break with your partner, or a women’s wellness retreat, we are sure you’ll find healing and connection.
